AQUILARIA CRASSNA,   AQUILARIA BANAENSAE

Year of Distillation: 2024

Appearance

This is a relatively dark honey color.

  1. Aquilaria crassna
    • Most common species cultivated and harvested for oud in Vietnam.
    • Produces a sweet, soft, creamy oud aroma, often with notes of honey, milk tea, tropical fruits, and gentle woods.
    • Traditional harvesting areas include Quảng Nam, Quảng Bình, and Khánh Hòa provinces.
  2. Aquilaria banaensae (less common, more wild type)
    • Native to southern Vietnam, particularly in the Bana Hills and nearby regions.
    • Produces oud with slightly more green, earthy, and forest-like notes compared to A. crassna.

Aroma Profile:

Opening:

  • A sharp, bright, almost camphorous hit — like ancient herbal medicines or cooling Chinese apothecary shops.
  • There’s a mentholic, vaporous aspect, but very smooth, not raw or chemical.

Heart:

  • As the sharpness settles, it reveals deep layers of aged woods, ginseng-like bitterness, cooling spices (like clove or cardamom), and dried medicinal roots.
  • There’s a whisper of floral bitterness — almost like dried lotus or chrysanthemum — intertwined with clean oud smoke.

Base:

  • The drydown is profoundly woody, slightly bitter-sweet, and resinous, like aged incense resins.
  • It leaves a cooling feeling in the nose even after the scent is gone — a signature of high-quality, medicinal-grade oud oils from Vietnam.

Overall Feel:

  • Clean, cooling, serious, and ancient.
  • Zero barnyard, zero funk — it feels sacred, healing, and aristocratic.
  • It smells less like “perfume” and more like something a monk would wear deep in meditation.

1. **Sweet and Woody**: A smooth, sweet woodiness is at the core, offering a delicate, calming presence.

2. **Floral and Fruity**: Light floral notes, often reminiscent of jasmine or rose, and hints of ripe fruits like figs or dates can be present, providing freshness.

3. **Soft Smokiness**: A subtle smoky nuance, less intense than other agarwoods, adds depth without overpowering the other notes.

4. **Green and Herbal**: A fresh, slightly green undertone can emerge, evoking the scent of damp earth or forest after rain.

5. **Balsamic and Resinous**: The finish has a gentle resinous quality with hints of spice or balsam, creating a soft, lingering warmth.
