Oud-Sense Method

Our oud sense method is Elixir Attar’s original method of assessing the smells and olfactory experiences of agarwood. Since it can be very difficult to describe agarwood oil smells in absolute terms, we figured it is best to break it down as follows.

Let us say we have our Filipino Kinamic oil and we want to describe how it smells.

We first should start by saying how oils from this region smell and feel and list all these qualities in a numbered list. After multiple wearings, we should be able to give weight to certain qualities more than others.

For example

Kinam-grade Filipino agarwood is among the rarest and most valuable forms of agarwood, known for its extraordinarily complex and captivating scent profile. The aroma is both deep and evolving, reflecting a sense of elegance and spiritual depth. Its scent profile typically includes:

1. **Intense Woody Core**: A rich, dense woody base with a creamy texture that is more refined than typical agarwood oils.

2. **Sweet and Ethereal**: A rare, almost mystical sweetness that is delicate, not overpowering, blending seamlessly with the woody tones.

3. **Cool and Minty**: A unique feature of kinam agarwood is the cool, mint-like undertone that adds a fresh and airy quality to the scent.

4. **Spicy and Resinous**: Warm, spicy notes like cinnamon or cloves interweave with resinous balsamic touches, creating a dynamic warmth.

5. **Subtle Smokiness**: A faint, elegant smokiness that lingers softly without being sharp or overwhelming.

6. **Floral and Herbal Nuances**: Light, fleeting hints of dried florals or soft herbs can emerge, adding to the multi-layered complexity.

Now for us we analyze the smell of the oud oil properly. We breakdown the olfactory experience of the oil as follows.

Scent Progression

3-1-5-2-4-6

meaning it is cool/minty, then intensely woody, then subtly smokey, then sweet, then spicy, and finally floral/herbal

In order to analyze the relative intensity of each olfactory experience

We then add the following

Moderate

High

Low

Scent Chart (like pie chart)

3 (Moderate), meaning that even though it comes at first its not an intensely minty oil,

1 (High), meaning that even though it is experienced after the number 3, its is intense relative to 3, that is why we assigned High.

5 (High) means smokiness is intense

2 (moderate) means sweetness is moderate

4 (low) means spiciness is faint

6 (low) means herbal nuances are faint

Etc.

Because this system can get very complex very quickly as we add more levels of complexity (for example high, low, and moderate can be a scale from 0-100) giving us 100 possibilities), we will only mention the scent progression in the product page and we leave the second analysis to the oud connoisseur.

we hope you enjoy this method to experience our oud oils and any oud oils really.
